Instant result summary

Coffee Spending Calculator: Your result appears above. It's a fast estimate based on the inputs you entered — use it to compare options, then confirm with a professional before making a decision.

What does this result mean?

  • The number is only as accurate as your inputs — small errors compound.
  • Compare 2–3 scenarios rather than acting on a single result.
  • Talk to a licensed professional before making a large financial or medical decision.

How does the formula work?

True cost per cup = Price × (1 + Tip rate). Weekly = Cups per day × Days per week × True cost per cup. Monthly = Weekly × 52 ÷ 12. Annual = Weekly × 52. Home cost = Cups per year × Home cost per cup. Annual savings = Annual spend − Home cost. Invested value = Monthly savings × [((1 + r)^n − 1) ÷ r], r = 7% ÷ 12, n = Years × 12.

How it works

The coffee-shop habit is the classic example of a small, frequent purchase that becomes a large annual number. A single weekday latte at $5.75 plus a 10% tip is about $6.33, which is $1,645 a year — more than most people's monthly rent contribution to a shared apartment. Brewing the same cup at home costs roughly $0.30 to $1.00 depending on whether you buy grocery beans or specialty roasts, so the gap is usually $1,300 to $1,600 a year. The point of this calculator is not that buying coffee is a mistake. It is that the cost is invisible at the register and obvious at the annual level, which lets you make a deliberate choice: keep the habit and budget for it, or convert part of it and route the difference somewhere useful. The investment projection uses a 7% long-run return, the conventional planning figure for a diversified stock portfolio after inflation is ignored, so treat it as illustrative rather than a promise.
