How to read your result

Screen Time Cost Calculator: Your result appears above. It's a fast estimate based on the inputs you entered — use it to compare options, then confirm with a professional before making a decision.

What your result means

  • The number is only as accurate as your inputs — small errors compound.
  • Compare 2–3 scenarios rather than acting on a single result.
  • Talk to a licensed professional before making a large financial or medical decision.

How does the formula work?

Hours per year = Hours per day × 365. Cash per month = Device and data + Apps and content + (Weekly impulse buys × 52 ÷ 12). Cash per year = Cash per month × 12. Opportunity cost = Hours per year × Value of an hour. Total annual cost = Cash per year + Opportunity cost. Cash per screen hour = Cash per year ÷ Hours per year.

How it works

Screen time has two prices. The visible one is cash: the phone plan, the home internet, the apps, and the purchases that feeds are engineered to trigger. The invisible one is the hours themselves. American adults average roughly four to five hours of non-work screen time a day, which is about 1,600 to 1,800 hours a year — the equivalent of a second part-time job. Pricing those hours at even a modest rate produces a number large enough to change habits, which is the point of the exercise rather than a bill anyone actually pays. Treat the opportunity-cost figure as a comparison, not a debt: it answers what else that time could have produced. The cash-per-hour metric is the more actionable half. If your devices and content cost $2,000 a year and you use them 1,600 hours, you pay about $1.25 an hour for entertainment that is competitive with any other format. If your usage is low but your spending is high, the subscriptions rather than the hours are the problem.
