Dining Out Cost Calculator: Your result appears above. It's a fast estimate based on the inputs you entered — use it to compare options, then confirm with a professional before making a decision.

What does this result mean?

  • The number is only as accurate as your inputs — small errors compound.
  • Compare 2–3 scenarios rather than acting on a single result.
  • Talk to a licensed professional before making a large financial or medical decision.

How does the formula work?

Restaurant weekly = Meals × Bill per person × People × (1 + (Tip + Tax) ÷ 100). Delivery weekly = Orders × Subtotal × (1 + (Fees + Tip + Tax) ÷ 100). Weekly = Restaurant + Delivery. Monthly = Weekly × 52 ÷ 12. Annual = Weekly × 52. Home cost = Meals eaten out × Cost to cook per person. Annual savings = (Weekly − Home weekly) × 52.

How it works

Food away from home is the single largest discretionary line in most American budgets, and Bureau of Labor Statistics spending data has shown it running close to half of total food spending for years. The reason it grows quietly is that the menu price is only about two-thirds of what leaves your account: an 18% tip and 7–9% sales tax add roughly a quarter, and delivery apps add another 20–35% through service fees, delivery fees and menu prices that are marked up above in-store rates. A $38 delivery subtotal frequently settles above $55. Cooking the same meal usually costs $4 to $8 per person, so the gap per meal is large even before tips. The useful output here is the all-in cost per meal, because it makes the comparison concrete: when a delivered dinner works out to $28 a head, the question stops being whether cooking is cheaper and becomes which two meals a week you actually want to pay a premium for.
