How to read your result

Childcare Cost Calculator: Your result appears above. It's a fast estimate based on the inputs you entered — use it to compare options, then confirm with a professional before making a decision.

What your result means

  • The number is only as accurate as your inputs — small errors compound.
  • Compare 2–3 scenarios rather than acting on a single result.
  • Talk to a licensed professional before making a large financial or medical decision.

How does the formula work?

Weekly cost = Σ (children in each age band × weekly rate) × (Days ÷ 5), reduced by the sibling discount on each additional child. Nanny and au pair care is priced per family, not per child. Annual = Weekly × Weeks. Share of income = Annual ÷ Household income. FSA savings = min(FSA contribution, Annual cost) × Marginal tax rate. Net cost = Annual − FSA savings.

How it works

Childcare is the largest household expense for many American families with young children, routinely exceeding both the mortgage and in-state college tuition. Costs are driven mostly by the child's age, because state licensing rules set staff-to-child ratios: infant rooms often require one caregiver for every three or four babies, while preschool rooms allow one for ten or more. That ratio, not the curriculum, is why infant care can cost 30–50% more than preschool at the same center. The federal benchmark for affordable childcare is 7% of household income, a threshold most families with an infant in center care exceed by a wide margin. Two tax tools soften the blow: a Dependent Care FSA lets you pay with pre-tax dollars up to the annual employer-plan limit, and the Child and Dependent Care Credit covers a percentage of qualifying expenses — but you cannot claim the same dollars twice, so run the FSA first if your marginal rate is high.
