How does the formula work?

Board feet = area × thickness in inches. Effective set yield = 4,000 bd ft × field yield %. Sets = ceil(board feet ÷ effective yield). R-value = thickness × 6.5. Coating gallons = area ÷ (1,604 × solids % ÷ dry mils).

How it works

Sprayed polyurethane foam is the only commercial roof system that is simultaneously the insulation, the membrane and the slope correction. It is applied as a liquid that expands about thirty times, self-flashes every penetration with no seams anywhere, and can be tapered by the applicator to drive water toward drains on a dead-flat roof that ponds. Closed-cell roofing foam delivers roughly R-6.5 per inch aged — the highest of any commercial roof insulation — and it bonds to the substrate so completely that wind uplift performance is exceptional. The two things that decide whether an SPF roof succeeds are yield and coating. A set is nominally 4,000 board feet, but cold substrates, wind and inexperienced applicators routinely drop real yield to 80 percent, so estimating at 100 percent guarantees a shortfall. And uncoated foam is destroyed by UV within months, so the topcoat is not optional — it is the roof's weatherproofing layer and it must be recoated roughly every 15 years.
